The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, more commonly known as IIT Madras, was established in 1959 as an autonomous institute. It has gained prominence, being ranked 1st for B.Tech by NIRF in 2025 and 3rd by Collegedunia. It stands out among IITs for its strong focus on research, attributed to its advanced laboratories, seasoned faculty, and robust academic resources. IIT Madras was founded with the assistance of the West German government and still maintains strong Indo-German research collaborations. The institute boasts India's largest IIT Research Park and operates from a unique campus within Guindy National Park, known for its biodiversity and lively student atmosphere. It also made waves as the first IIT to offer a fully online BSc in Data Science, opening up IIT education beyond the JEE entrance exam. The cultural and technical fests, Saarang and Shaastra, stand out as some of the largest in Asia, adding vibrancy to campus life. Notably, IIT Madras is the only IIT to have a small airstrip for UAV, drone, and aerospace experiments. It is also at the forefront of the Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering discipline, which is not commonly found across IITs. With over 10 specializations offered in its B.Tech program, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) remains the most sought-after course. Admission is competitive, based on JEE Advanced scores, with CSE closing ranks usually under 180. For the 1st-year B.Tech CSE, the tuition fee is INR 2.53 Lakhs, excluding an additional hostel fee of INR 20,000. Placements at IIT Madras are impressive, with the highest package reaching INR 4.3 Crore per annum in 2024 and 25 students bagging offers exceeding INR 1 Crore, securing its position as a prestigious institution in India.
