About

The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) in Karnal stands out as a leading institute focusing on advancing dairy research. Initially founded as the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in Bangalore in 1923, it evolved into the Imperial Dairy Institute by 1936 and gained its present title, National Dairy Research Institute, post-Independence in 1947. Spanning a vast 560-hectare campus, the institute is self-equipped with laboratories, offices, hostels, a hospital, residential areas, and an auditorium. The institute's advanced laboratories boast cutting-edge analytical tools for research in modern fields including Molecular Biology, Cell Culture, Fermentation Technology, Protein Chemistry, Nutritional Studies, Food Technology, Microbiology, and Micro Element Analysis. Attracting international students from countries like Nepal, Iraq, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Netherlands, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Iran, the institute has a global reach. Housing an elite herd of over 1600 dairy animals, including cattle, buffaloes, and goats, NDRI supports breed improvement projects and other research undertakings. The institute offers scholarships supported by the Government of India, ICAR, the Alumni Association, and the Dairy Industry, distributed based on merit. This financial aid aims to support as many deserving students as possible who excel academically and strive for higher education. The Joint Director, based on a Standing Committee's recommendations, assigns these scholarships. First-year scholars are chosen based on entrance exam rankings, while those in the second, third, and fourth years are assessed on previous year's performance. In the event of tied scores, past academic results are considered for determining merit, although for second-year students, their entrance examination scores remain significant.
