KJ Somaiya Medical College was founded in 1991 by the esteemed Padmabhushan Pujya Shri Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya. This institution is aligned with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) in Nashik and provides a range of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Diploma courses in Medical Sciences. Managed by the Somaiya Medical Trust, the college is linked to the KJ Somaiya Hospital & Research Centre, which offers affordable healthcare and actively joins National Health Programs. The facility includes a 500-bed training hospital with contemporary amenities, supported by 145 skilled faculty and 104 Resident Doctors across 21 well-equipped departments. Annually, 50 students enroll for the MBBS program. Located at the Somaiya Ayurvihar Complex, it spans over 22.5 acres in Mumbai's prime area at Sion on the Eastern Express Highway. The complex boasts 21 departments, classrooms, laboratories, research facilities, a library, OPDs, wards, operation theatres, casualty, ICU, and more. A dedicated workshop caters to equipment repairs and maintenance, employing 24 specialized workers like carpenters, electricians, and mechanics, featuring a diesel-powered 180 KV generator for emergencies. In terms of extra-curricular activities, students actively participate in both state and national competitions, boasting achievements like a gold in a Chess Competition at AIMMS, New Delhi, and a silver in 100 meters running at Vidyavihar. The medical education program, Akarshan, featured a CME event focused on WHO’s theme Hypertension. Meanwhile, a final-year student embarked on an ICMR project on urine analysis in urological conditions. The college publishes an annual magazine, Darpan, fostering student expression through various literary forms. Regarding infrastructure, the library spans 16,000 sq.ft with seating for 200, offering a rich collection of books and journals. Lecture halls, equipped with modern audio-visual tools, can collectively accommodate hundreds of students. A vibrant annual inter-college festival, Aakarshan, features singing, dance, fashion shows, quizzes, debates, and sports events every March, enriching campus life.
