About

Established in 1972, the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu is one of the oldest and most well-regarded medical institutions in the region. Affiliated with the University of Jammu and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), GMC Jammu has a long-standing reputation for providing quality medical education and healthcare services. While it isn't featured in the national NIRF rankings, its regional significance and robust infrastructure make it a top choice for medical aspirants. The college's flagship program is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), with a total intake of 180 students. Admission is highly competitive and is based solely on the scores obtained in the NEET UG exam, with counselling managed by the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE). For the 2025-2026 academic session, the annual tuition fee for the MBBS course is expected to be around ₹53,100, making it an extremely affordable government option. Besides MBBS, the college also offers postgraduate courses like MD and MS through the NEET PG entrance exam. Unlike engineering colleges, medical institutions don't have traditional campus placements. Instead, after the 4.5-year academic course, students undergo a mandatory one-year compulsory rotating residential internship at the associated hospitals. This practical training provides invaluable clinical exposure. For the 2025-2026 period, interns are anticipated to receive a monthly stipend of approximately ₹12,500. This intensive internship prepares graduates to either serve as medical officers or pursue specialized postgraduate studies.
